UPS Climbs in FORTUNE Ranking of “Best Companies for Minorities”

For the sixth consecutive year, UPS has ranked among the “50 Best Companies for Minorities” in an annual survey published by FORTUNE magazine. The company also this week was honored as among the “100 Best Places to Work in Information Technology” by ComputerWorld magazine.

UPS’s continuing commitment to diversity was recognized by FORTUNE as the company improved upon its performance of last year, climbing three notches in the rankings from No. 26 to No. 23. The survey ranks corporations on their commitment to hiring, promoting and retaining a diverse pool of talented employees. In addition, it reviews companies’ support of supplier diversity and philanthropic support of organizations that support minorities.

The ComputerWorld survey, now in its 11th year, pushed UPS from No. 20 in the 2003 rankings up to No. 9 this year. The magazine reviewed a large amount of data ranging from salary and bonus information and turnover rates to benefits and tuition reimbursement policies. UPS employees then were selected at random and questioned about morale, the importance of various benefits, career growth and equal treatment of employees.

UPS has received a number of other diversity honors in 2004. DiversityInc magazine ranked UPS No. 32 among its “Top 50 Companies for Diversity;” Hispanic magazine ranked UPS No. 7 among the “Top 10 Companies for Latinos,” and UPS was named one of the “Elite Eleven” of America’s Top Corporations for Women Business Enterprises by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council.

In addition, for the fourth year in a row, UPS employees helped the company become the nation’s top contributor to the annual United Way campaign, generously providing USD54.2 million.
