UPS Japan to begin direct shipping service to U.S.

UPS Japan Co. announced Tuesday that it will launch a small-lot direct maritime shipping service to the U.S. on July 1.

The company will jointly implement the Trade Direct Ocean service with a joint venture between United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS) and Suzuyo & Co.

Under the new service, an invoice that shows the shipping destination will be attached to freight in Japan, and the freight will then be shipped to Los Angeles, from where it will be transported to destinations throughout the U.S.

Ships carrying the cargo will leave daily from the ports of Tokyo and Shimizu. Items will be delivered 21-26 days after being sent, up to 20 days faster than conventional services can manage.

The new service is seen as well suited for such items as general merchandise, electronic products and replacement parts. It will offer clients shorter shipping times and the ability to reduce or eliminate local distribution centers.
