NYK Logistics global expansion continues

NYK Logistics, the subsidiary of one of the world’s largest shipping lines, has continued its global expansion with announcements of new facilities in Brazil, Italy and Germany.

The company has recently opened a new distribution facility for Yamaha in Sao Paulo, Brazil where it operates as a Lead Logistics Provider for the motorcycle manufacturer. NYK has a long standing relationship with the Japanese multinational and operates five distribution centers for Yamaha Motor in Asia, Europe, North America and South America. In the near future it is planning to open a further facility in Hamburg, Germany.

Meanwhile in Italy, NYK Logistics has signed an agreement with Prologis for a 355,804 square feet (33,055 sq m) ‘build to suit’ facility in ProLogis Park Romentino near Milan. Although this is the first deal between the two companies in Italy, it represents the ninth globally. NYK Logistics operates out of Prologis facilities in France, Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Great Britain and the United States. Last year NYK Logistics and Prologis signed a deal for a 15,000 sq m facility in Frankfurt to accommodate a contract with Japanese car manufacturer, Toyota.

NYK Logistics has undergone a number of changes over the past year. Its downstream (secondary) distribution operations New Wave Logistics and UCI Logistics have been re-branded as NYK Logistics along with its upstream consolidation or buyers service Orient Consolidation Service. The aim is to continue the development of the group from its shipping roots into a comprehensive logistics provider. It has as one of its key strengths a blue chip client base of Japanese manufacturers (such as Yamaha, Panasonic, Makita, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Toshiba, Pioneer, and Noritsu), and this has been extended in recent years to include companies such as Jaguar, Clarks, GlaxoSmithKline and Philips.
