Israel Postal Company on the way

The Postal Law was passed for a second and third reading by the Knesset Economics Committee on Wednesday after nearly a year’s deliberation.

This will make it possible for the Postal Authority to become the Postal Company and compete with the private market.

On January 1, 2005, the new state Postal Company will function and some postal services now exclusively belonging to the Postal Authority will be open to competition.

This will expand in 2007, and by 2009, private companies will be allowed to compete in 70 percent of all postal services.

The following year, the remaining services may be opened fully to competition.

The company wants to be able to sell airline tickets, tickets to plays and cultural events and lottery tickets, and to offer insurance policies.
