Toshiba Corp. said Thursday it has won a contract to provide French postal service La Poste with an advanced mail-processing system that will enable increased efficiency and reliability in mail delivery.
Under the terms of the 3.5 billion yen contract, Toshiba’s German subsidiary, Toshiba Europe GmbH, will deliver at least 40 units of culler facer cancellers in the model TSC-1000 series over three years starting May next year, the company said.
Depending on the system’s performance, La Poste will consider introducing up to another 60 units, which would bring the total value of the order to about 9 billion yen, it said.
Toshiba’s mail-processing system integrates a high-performance optical character reader to recognize addresses for sorting purposes and can process more than 30,000 pieces of mail an hour.
A culler facer canceller separates out mail pieces that cannot be machine-processed as letter-class items, scans them to recognize the stamps and addresses, and cancels the postage stamp before sorting them by category or destination or both.
