Postwatch visit to Japan Post

As a part of its research activities Postwatch conducts a number of international visits. Such visits enable us to learn from best practice elsewhere, share information and develop an understanding of trends worldwide.
Trends in the Japanese postal industry to a significant extent mirror those in the UK. Its main postal operator has recently been made into a public corporation, and public opinion is greatly opposed to the closure of post offices and the prospect of privatisation, although this remains high up on the Prime Minister’s agenda. It was therefore felt that Postwatch would benefit from meeting with Japan Post and the Ministry for Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications (MPHPT) to establish how Japan Post and the regulator are approaching some of the challenges we are also facing at home.
