Polish Courier Services Market Dominated by Three Private Companies

The Polish market of courier services is dominated by three private companies DHL-Servisco, General Logistics System (GLS) and Masterlink, which control together 66 pct of the country’s market, the telecommunication and postal market regulator URTiP said.

The competitiveness of the state-run postal services company Poczta Polska in the field of express delivery of parcels has been decreasing in recent years, despite the fact that its technical potential and human resources are much larger compared to those of private courier companies. Poczta Polska controls now 4.5 pct of the country’s courier market and its share is expected to diminish further, URTiP added. Currently there are 86 private courier companies operating in Poland, compared to 16 companies in 1996 and 59 companies in 2003. A total 28 courier start-ups were registered in 2004 and their number is expected to rise after Poland’s accession to the European Union (EU) on May 1, 2004 and the higher demand for courier services.
