Donald Trump opposes additional USPS funding because of mail-in voting

US President Donald Trump has voiced his opposition to additional funding for the United States Postal Service (USPS) because he does not want to see it used for mail-in voting for the Presidential election November.

A record number of people are expected to vote by mail due to the pandemic. However, President Trump has claimed that mail-in voting offers opportunities for fraud, and has consequently refused to sign off on $25bn in emergency funding for the USPS or $3.5bn for election security that Democrats – and the USPS Board of Governors – are calling for.

In an interview with Fox News, President Trump said: “They want $3.5 billion for something that’ll turn out to be fraudulent, that’s election money basically. They want $3.5 billion for the mail-in votes. Universal mail-in ballots. They want $25 billion for the Post Office. Now they need that money in order to make the Post Office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots.”

House Speaker (and Democrat) Nancy Pelosi countered President Trump’s claims during an interview on MSNBC, saying the $25 billion funding for USPS was proposed by the USPSUS President Donald Trump has voiced his opposition to additional funding for the United States Postal Service (USPS) because he does not want to see it used for mail-in voting for the Presidential election November. Board of Governors, not Democrats.
