DHL named best express operator and best 3PL at the 2005 Asian Freight & Supply Chain Awards

At the prestigious 2005 Asian Freight & Supply Chain Awards (AFSCA) yesterday evening in Hong Kong, DHL – the world’s leading express and logistics company -was named Best Express Operator for the 19th consecutive year, reflecting the company’s market leadership and service excellence in air express offerings in Asia Pacific.

DHL also clinched the Best 3PL – third party logistics provider – accolade for the first time, in recognition of DHL’s expertise in supply chain management. Both awards underscore DHL’s leadership and ability to offer the full suite of express and supply chain solutions from a single source.

“We are extremely honoured to receive these accolades,” said Scott Price, Chief Executive Officer, DHL Express Asia Pacific. “The awards represent our customers’ vote of confidence in DHL. Over the last few years, we have put in place a carefully thought-out strategy building on our infrastructure investments, domestic acquisitions, network coverage; and the development of innovative express delivery solutions in response to a changing marketplace.”

“The Best 3PL award speaks volumes of our pursuit in meeting the growing demand for customised supply chain management services, fuelled in part by the continuing outsourcing trend and globalisation,” said Peter Landsiedel, Chief Executive Officer -Asia Pacific, DHL Danzas Air & Ocean, commenting on the Best 3PL win. “The twin forces of globalisation and technology cycles have created an increasingly complex and challenging environment for businesses. Against this landscape, market battles are increasingly being fought and won by harnessing the supply chain to gain a competitive edge.”

The awards follow a series of recent DHL initiatives to strengthen and optimise service offerings in the Asia Pacific to tap growth opportunities in the region. These include the five-year US$273 million investment programme to reinforce DHL’s market leadership in China; an investment in India of US$163 million towards the acquisition of Blue Dart Express; a 50/50 joint venture with New Zealand Post’s Express Couriers Limited; and a new US$16 million Oceania Hub in Australia, the largest of its kind in the Oceania region. With these developments, DHL is now the only international express player with domestic offerings in two Asian giants – China and India, as well as in New Zealand for the Oceania region.

DHL has also announced a US$19 million investment by DHL Danzas Air & Ocean and DHL Solutions for establishing and upgrading logistics centres in the rest of Asia Pacific. To date, DHL’s investments in the region over the past several years total over US$1.4 billion.

The AFSCA is organised by Cargonews Asia, a leading freight industry newspaper in the region, and is widely acknowledged as the industry’s most celebrated accolade which seeks to recognise and honour outstanding shippers, logistics providers and cargo transport companies. More than 12,500 Cargonews Asia readers were polled to select companies that are the best service providers in 41 industry-specific categories of this year’s AFSCA. DHL is the only company to have won the Best Express Service award since the Asian Freight Industry Awards – the predecessor of the AFSCA – was inaugurated in 1987.
