Dubai will host UPU’s 2006 Strategy Conference

The Universal Postal Union today announced in Dubai that it has selected the United Arab Emirates as the venue for its high-level Strategy Conference in November 2006. The UPU Strategy Conference, held every four years, takes stock of the progress achieved in meeting the objectives of the World Postal Strategy adopted at the previous Congress and charts the direction for Posts until the next one, which will be held in Nairobi in 2008.

The latest World Postal Strategy was adopted in Bucharest, Romania, in September 2004, during the 23rd UPU Congress. Its five main objectives focus on universal postal service, quality of service and postal network efficiency, markets and responding to customer needs, postal reform and sustainable development, and cooperation and interaction among external shareholders.

“The UAE has been making its presence felt on the global map through a number of dynamic initiatives, and we are confident that Emirates Post will spare no efforts in making this event a success,” said James GUNDERSON, Director, Office of the Director General, Strategic Planning and Communication, at the UPU’s International Bureau, during a press conference.

“The UPU’s decision reflects the world body’s intention to give importance to the Middle East, and build closer interaction with the nations of the region,” added Abdullah AL DABOOS, Director General of Emirates Post. “As Posts undergo major transformation driven by changes in technology and business processes, the UPU has a pivotal role to play in helping Posts adapt to the new environment.”

Some 800 delegates from more than 130 UPU member countries are expected to attend the two-day Strategy Conference.

This is the first time that the Conference will be held outside Switzerland. The past two conferences of 1997 and 2002 were held in Geneva.
