Portugal postal traffic down 3.5 pct Y/Y Q2 2005

Portugal’s postal traffic exceeded 66 million shipments in the second quarter of 2005, down by 3.5 pct year-on-year, data from the local communications regulator Anacom showed on September 21, 2005.

Compared to the first quarter of 2005, the country’s postal traffic grew by some 3.0 pct.

Some five million of the total number of 66 million shipments in the three-month period April to June 2005 were express mail deliveries.

The national traffic in the second quarter of 2005 exceeded 57 million shipments, accounting for 86 pct of all traffic. On the other hand, the outgoing international traffic and the incoming international traffic amounted to some five million shipments and four million shipments, respectively.

The share of the country’s postal operator CTT-Correios de Portugal in the national postal traffic increased to 93.9 pct in the three-month period April to June 2005 from 93.6 pct in the previous quarter.

CTT’s share in the Portuguese outgoing postal traffic fell to 92.2 pct in the second quarter of 2005, compared to 93.4 pct in the first three months of the year. On the other hand, CTT’s share in the incoming postal traffic rose to 82.7 pct from 82.2 pct.

CTT registered an increase in its market share in the segment of the express mail services to 41.1 pct in the period April to June 2005 from 38.9 pct in the previous quarter. According to Anacom, the other postal service providers in the country accounted for 58.9 pct of the express mail traffic in the second quarter of 2005, against 61.1 pct in the previous three months.
