DHL signs landmark agreement for regional hub at Jordan Queen Alia Airport

The hub will act as a link between the Middle East, Europe and North Africa facilitating trade and enhancing the DHL express services through a state-of-the-art facility with onsite customs clearance.

The development of the hub was confirmed on November 29th 2005 with the signature of the agreement by Rhys Williams, Jordan Country Manager of DHL and Captain Suleiman Obeidat, Director General of the Jordan Civil Aviation Authority.

DHL Jordan recently announced the development of a 4,000 square metre regional hub at the Queen Alia Airport to be operational before the end of 2006.

'We are delighted that DHL has chosen to develop a regional hub in Jordan and believe this initiative will build a long-lasting relationship and generate further investments,' said Captain Suleiman Obeidat. 'Our aim is for Queen Alia Airport to become a cargo hub in the region and DHL is contributing to this vision.'

With both parties agreeing on the promising future of the initiative, Mr Williams stated: 'The development of this hub represents a milestone in DHL's investment in Jordan and will drive DHL Express Services to new levels. In 2006 we will also be inaugurating two DHL Express Service Centres, located in the Shmeisani and Downtown areas of Amman to ensure we are conveniently accessible to our customers.'

The new hub will widen the range of services offered by DHL such as the delivery of time-based products, DHL Express Services. Customers will have more control and choice in the delivery of their goods and with the custom clearance process taking place on site, the door-to-door delivery transit time is radically reduced and customers benefit from guaranteed time-delivery.

The hub will be developed according to global standards with state-of-the-art equipment and machinery including electronic conveyers and x-ray machines and with a similar design to DHL's existing facility in Beirut.

Bachi Spiga, DHL's Head of Middle East Operations commented: 'The Jordan Gateway will significantly enhance DHL's ability to connect the Gulf to the Levant, North Africa and Europe. The development of this regional hub combined with DHL's performance and customs clearance expertise represents a big opportunity for our customers. This initiative also demonstrates DHL's role in stimulating cross border trade.'

As DHL continues its expansion in Jordan in line with His Majesty King Abdullah's vision for the economic and social development of the country, the hub will not only attract more foreign investment, but also expand the existing network and create many local employment opportunities as DHL Jordan prides itself in predominantly employing Jordanian citizens.
