UPS: this new facility will play a vital role in import and export growth throughout the Czech Republic
UPS has officially opened its new Prague package sorting and delivery facility in Tuchoměřice.
The facility marks UPS’s largest-ever investment in the country and strengthens the connection between the Czech Republic and UPS’s global network across 220 countries and territories.
Located near Vaclav Havel Airport, the facility serves Prague and Středočeský kraj, two key economic regions home to growing industrial manufacturing, retail and high-tech sectors. Small and medium-sized businesses, will benefit from greater flexibility thanks to later cut-off times and daily flights as they look to reach key domestic and global e-commerce markets, including Germany. The Czech e-commerce market totaled 196 billion CZK in 2020, up 26.5% YoY. The share of e-commerce in total retail sales increased to more than 16% (APEK, Czech Association of e-commerce).
Spread across 8,500m2 and fitted with the latest package sorting technology, the center is capable of sorting 5,000 packages per hour, which is five times more than the facility it replaces in Ruzyně. This facility matches the need for growing demand, with the UPS’s Smart E-Commerce Report showing there has been a 50% increase in European shoppers saying they will do ‘all’ or ‘most’ of their shopping online since the pandemic.
“Our investment in Tuchoměřice represents more than an investment in UPS and our capabilities – it’s an investment for our customers and their potential for growth and success. Located in the heart of central Europe, this new facility will play a vital role in import and export growth throughout the Czech Republic and Europe, today, and in the years to come,” said Ufku Akaltan, President of UPS East Europe District.
The Tuchoměřice center also brings package, freight and supply chain services, as well as the headquarters of UPS Czech Republic, Slovakia and Ukraine, under one roof. The new facility also acts as the headquarters of UPS East Europe District. Built to BREAM Very Good Certification[1], the building has LED Lighting throughout and offers a number of charging stations for personal EVs. UPS plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, including fueling 40% of its ground operations with alternative fuels by 2025 as well as powering all its facilities with 100% renewable electricity by 2035.
The new facility is part of the company’s recently completed multi-year, US$2bn European investment plan, which has modernized and expanded the UPS network across Europe.
UPS first began offering services to the Czech Republic in 1992 and currently employs approximately 500 people.
