Austrian Post expands its logistics infrastructure
An important milestone for western Austria was reached today in Vorarlberg, where Austrian Post officially opened the expansion of the logistics centre in Wolfurt together with Dr. Barbara Schöbi-Fink, Governor of Vorarlberg, Angelika Moosbrugger, Vice Mayor of Wolfurt, and DI Dr. Georg Pölzl, General Director of Austrian Post.
Due to the sharp increase in parcel volumes, Austrian Post is expanding its logistics infrastructure, with more than 500 million euros flowing into the expansion of logistics centers and post bases over the next few years.
“As a strongly export-oriented and competitive business location, Vorarlberg is one of the most efficient regions within Europe. This can also be clearly seen in the positive economic development. I am delighted that Austrian Post has expanded the logistics centre in Vorarlberg into an important location for western Austria and congratulate all those involved. The expansion of the postal logistics centre in Wolfurt is a benefit for the labour market as well as for local companies and the population,” says Vorarlberg State Governor Dr. Barbara Schöbi-Fink.
“In the exceptional year 2020, we recorded an increase in parcel volumes of 30 percent and we will continue to transport more and more parcels every year in the future. In order to continue to ensure the high quality of our services, we are investing massively in our infrastructure. The Vorarlberg logistics centre is an important expansion stage in which we have not only expanded the sorting capacity at the site to 8,000 parcels per hour, but have also created 40 new jobs,” says Dr. Georg Pölzl, Director General of Austrian Post.
“The new logistics centre is a commitment to the location for the entire region and not only means a secure parcel service, but also creates new jobs. MODERN, COMPACT AND SUSTAINABLE: THE LOGISTICS CENTRE IN WOLFURT
The one-and-a-half-year construction work took place during ongoing operation and in a confined space. With the expansion of the logistics center, the sorting capacity was significantly increased from around 5,000 parcels to 8,000 parcels per hour. As a result, Austrian Post has also created 40 new jobs, and in the future almost 160 employees will work at the site, 70 of them in the parcel delivery base. The investment volume for the expansion amounts to 27 million euros.
Despite the compact conditions in the industrial park, Austrian Post also focused on sustainability and environmental protection here: the expansion was implemented in a space-saving manner and without further soil sealing. Through the construction of an underground car park with 111 parking spaces for cars and additional parking facilities for bicycles, these areas could be moved underground, building on which the extension was set up. A new photovoltaic system with an output of 360 kilowatts peak was installed on the roof of the logistics centre. The outdoor spaces were designed by landscape architects and gardeners in an environmentally friendly, sustainable and ecological way. This creates a positive effect for the climate, the flora and fauna and, last but not least, for the employees.
The Vorarlberg logistics centre in Wolfurt is technically state-of-the-art with the expansion and is one of the most modern locations of Austrian Post. Small construction work will follow in 2022, when the façade of the administration building will be renewed.
