TNT joins Cargo 2000

TNT Freight Management, the international air and ocean logistics unit of TNT Logistics, joined Cargo 2000, the International Air Transport Association interest group focused on electronically streamlining the air freight delivery process.

“We are putting strong emphasis on process optimization and consistency and quality of data,” said Hakan Nilsson, chief information officer for TNT Freight Management. “We have come to the conclusion that our own initiatives in this area aligns perfectly well with Cargo 2000 and have high hopes that Cargo 2000 is now at the point of breaking through a barrier.”

Added Cargo 2000 Program Director Lothar Moehle: “The fact that TNT Freight Management has joined Cargo 2000 underlines both the importance and value of our quality program. … Businesses of all sizes in the air cargo supply chain can understand the full benefits of what we are implementing.”

Cargo 2000 aims to reduce the number of individual processes in the air cargo supply chain from 40 to 19, primarily by creating a paperless e-commerce platform for transactions related to air cargo shipping. IATA says Cargo 2000 “substantially reduces time spent managing irregularities, such as service failures, cuts the time required for manual track and trace procedures and leads to a reduction is service recovery costs.”

TNT recently announced plans to sell of its $4 billion logistics business this year to focus more on its express and mail units, which it says offer better returns than logistics, a big revenue producer that yields low operating results.
