Five-year plan takes shape

MAIL, express and logistics services company TNT is to inject €100m ($130m) into the emerging Indian market in the next five years in a bid to set up an integrated air and road network.

The Dutch company has ambitious plans aiming to be the leading integrated operator in the Indian market by 2010.

Announced in Mumbai, the launch is believed to make TNT the first multinational brand in India to offer international and domestic services using an air and road network.

TNT has increased its offices from 17 locations to more than 50 and by the end of this year there will be more than 144 offices throughout the country.

Depot space has also been increased from 80,000 sq ft to more than 300,000 sq ft and it has a fleet of more than 1,000 vehicles that travel around 300,000 km a day.

By the end of this year, TNT should have more than 1,600 people employed in its Indian express distribution business.

James McCormac, chief operating officer of TNT’s Express division, said: ‘India is a country we are all excited about.

‘It has huge business potential and our expansion plan is clearly in line with our strategic intent to focus on and develop in emerging markets.

‘We have been operating our international express services in India for the past 12 years. With this launch we will be able to cater for a larger base of customers.

‘Huge investments have been made across manpower, infrastructure and IT to ensure that the customer experiences the same international quality of service.’

TNT India now offers air network solutions to customers and the road network services will start in mid-March as part of its Phase 2 expansion plans.

‘As the economy booms surface transport will turn out to be the real advantage,’ said Abhik Mitra, managing director of TNT India.

‘TNT’s expertise is clearly established with the successful operation of the European, Asian and Middle East road networks.

‘The TNT India road network will offer an attractively priced, fast and reliable mode of transport. It will be one of the most critical factors in establishing us as a clear leader in integrated express distribution.’

TNT’s domestic air network will offer time definite, day definite and value added services.

It will be the first express company to launch two time critical services called TNT Sameday and 9am Express.

TNT Sameday is delivered door-to-door the very same day. The 9am Express guarantees the delivery of a document next day as soon as offices open.

Both these services come with a money back guarantee and proactive delivery updates within one hour by mobile or e-mail.
