DHL begins construction of its new terminal at the Vitoria Airport

DHL, world leader in transport and logistics, began construction at the end of January on its new terminal at the Vitoria airport. This came after a final contract for sale was signed with the company Clasa, in accordance with the terms agreed upon in May 2005.

On a 12,000 sq. meter piece of ground the new facility will include a 3,600 sq. metre plant designed for sorting and distribution of parcels, and 1,400 square metres of office space. In addition to air freight management, the plant will have 12 land transport loading docks and capacity to handle 5,000 shipments per hour.

DHL has announced an investment of 7 million euros for the project. Plans are moving forward according to schedule, and the new building should be operative in September 2006. The plan has enjoyed excellent collaboration between authorities and the City Council of Vitoria.
For all of the work contracted to date, local companies have been selected which meet DHL’s strict requirements regarding quality and experience.

DHL regards the Vitoria airport (Foronda) as its strategic operations centre for air freight to and from Spain, Portugal and South-west France. An average of 100 tonnes of freight pass through Vitoria daily between 18 air and 25 overland transport operations.
In 1995 DHL moved its distribution centre from Madrid to Vitoria owing to its strategic location and the competitive advantages of the freight-oriented airport.
According to statistics provided the Spanish Airports and Air Navigation organisation, AENA, DHL handles a little over half of the airport’s total cargo.
In 2005 the volume of DHL shipments at Foronda reached 21,000 tonnes.
