Argos chooses Exel to run new home delivery facility

Argos Home Delivery has appointed Exel in a major contract to manage a brand new regional distribution centre in Darlington, County Durham. It will serve customers in the North of England, Scotland and Ireland.

Argos already uses Exel to manage two existing distribution centres, at Marsh Leys near Bedford and Acton Gate near Stafford. These operations, which between them cover the rest of the country, will continue.

The Darlington operation is based on a major new purpose-built 740,000 sq ft facility on the Faverdale North Business Park, where up to 70 new jobs will be created. In addition to providing a full range of warehousing services, Exel will also be handling home deliveries of Argos’s large products from the site.

Exel has supported Argos Home Delivery, a division of Argos Retail Group, since its launch in 1990, and now makes almost four million home deliveries each year for the company. It employs some 2,500 people across the contract.

Robin Wall, Argos Home Delivery’s operations director, says Exel is valued for its ‘robust logistics backbone’, which provides ‘all the logistics and delivery expertise we need to support our unprecedented growth.’
