German Deutsche Post may enter Austrian mail market
German postal company Deutsche Post may enter the Austrian mail market when it is fully liberalised in 2009, company CEO Klaus Zumwinkel said on March 14, 2006.
Deutsche Post, which had sought a minority stake in Austrian postal company Oesterreichische Post two year ago, would be interested in the mail business only in Vienna and its surroundings, Zumwinkel added.
Deutsche Post has a workforce of 1,200 in Austria, where it generates 320 mln euro ($384.9 mln) in revenue a year.
In eastern Europe Deutsche Post plans to expand its logistics and parcel services while the mail market has lower priority. The German company wants to buy into the Slovenian state-owned postal company. As a first step the Slovenian government plans to sell 24 pct of the postal company to a strategic partner.
The privatisation of the postal companies in other east European countries will take at least three to five years, Zumwinkel said. At present Deutsche Post/DHL express delivery operations in the Czech Republic and Hungary generate an annual revenue of 240 mln euro ($288.68 mln).
Deutsche Post total revenue generated in eastern Europe stands at 500 mln euro ($601.41 mln), while Oesterreichische Post generates only 23 mln euro ($27.67 mln) outside Austria, according to Zumwinkel’s estimates, indicating that the Austrian company had no real impact on foreign markets.
