Swiss govt announces plans to privatise Swiss Post

The Swiss government announced plans to privatise the Swiss Post as part of its efforts to liberalise the country’s postal services.

The government said it wants to create a level playing field for private competition.

Therefore it has ordered the Communications Department to draft a bill making the necessary amendments to Swiss postal legislation.

Even though Swiss Post may eventually lose its monopoly on the posting of letters, it will maintain its public services mandate, the government said.

The bill is expected to enter parliamentary debate sometime next year.

According to present legislation, the Swiss Post is unable to privatise postal services that fall under the public services mandate.
