Campost boss seeks to right wrongs in post offices

The Provisional Administrator of the Cameroon Postal Services, CAMPOST, Mr. Charles Tawamba, is on a campaign to rebuild confidence of customers in the various services of the corporation. It was within this perspective that the CAMPOST boss issued a release last week, reorganising the work schedule at some post offices in urban areas in the country.

According to the release, the main post offices in provincial headquarters, the Yaounde Central Post office, the Messa Post office, Douala Central post office and the Douala Akwa and Douala New Bell Post Offices now open their doors to the public from Monday to Saturday.

It is expected that the arrogance, laxity and corruption that sent customers away from the post offices would be laid to rest. Hearkening to this objective, the Messa and the Central Post offices in Yaounde opened their doors to customers for the first time on Saturday last weekend.

CAMPOST authorities said the operation was intended to satisfy customers that do not always have time to do their postal transactions during weekdays. When The Post visited the central post office on Saturday, May 6, the place was busy.

According to one of the workers there, Eliane Nyangono, the decision by the Provisional Administrator came as a welcome relief to them because they are enthusiastic to serve their customers. He said by 11:30am that day they had already received many customers to the extent that it was difficult for one to imagine that the day was a Saturday.

She hoped that they would fully satisfy customers because their doors would be henceforth opened from 7:30am to 4:00pm every Saturday.Another worker, Ndounkono Ousmanou who is responsible for electronic money order, said the decision to open post offices on Saturdays is a glaring testimony that the Provisional administrator actually listened to the cry of customers.

By 11:30am one of the workers Gerard Ekoto Medjo told The Post that he had already sold out stamps worth some FCFA 45000. He said the business seems to be quite interesting on Saturdays. The Post Master of the central Post office said the operations on Saturdays would increase revenue besides fully satisfying their customers.

At the Messa post office, business was even more vibrant when The Post reached there by 12:30pm. The place was awash with customers receiving and sending money orders and letters. According to the Postmaster, Mr. Raymond Nchouwat, the coming of the many customers was an indication that the CAMPOST management took a good decision.

Created out of the ashes of the National Postal Corporation, SONAPOST and the post office savings bank, CAMPOST inherited enormous problems. One of them was the waning of customers in the post offices due to lack of confidence. Besides, many customers could not get back their savings.

Mr. Charles Tawamba therefore, shoulders challenges of great magnitude in this perspective. Observers say the Provisional Administrator needs to implement more reforms in order to get rid the miasma that got hold of the outfit.

Mr Tawamba is engaged in a bid to convince Cameroonians that CAMPOST is righting the wings of the past and could render genuine services to its customers. CAMPOST now has 270 post offices, 18 EMS agencies, 80000 post boxes, and 800000 postal savings accounts. It has 1100 workers of all categories.
