Left oppose govt's decision on service tax in postal services

New Delhi, June 23 (PTI) The CPI(M) has opposed the decision to impose service tax on postal services and asked the government to reconsider the move and not impose fresh burden on the poor.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, party Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said levying of service tax on postal services, including money orders, speed post and postal life insurance, would “further burden” for common man.

He said crores of families in India were surviving on remittances sent by their working members through money orders, particularly the defence personnel. “These are lower middle class families who even otherwise are struggling to make both ends meet”.

Yechury said the CPI(M) has been suggesting that the government widen the tax base by taxing those who could afford to pay and not imposing fresh burden on the common people.

The CPI(M) leader urged the Prime Minister to reconsider the decision.
