New Man at the helm of Isle of Man Post

Isle of Man Post has appointed a new chief executive following the retirement of Bill Collister.

Bill Chacksfield, 58, is joining the firm from The Business Post Group in the UK where he headed up its home delivery operation.

Prior to that he spent 20 years with the TNT delivery group and held chief executive positions in the UK, United States and Europe. He is also a former RAF officer.

He said: ‘I was 20 years with TNT. The most prestigious position I had was president of TNT Express Espana, running all its businesses in Spain. I also ran a joint venture called White Arrow Express, which was a partnership between TNT and Great Universal Stores.

‘I left TNT in 2000 and joined the Business Post Group, building up a home delivery business from a turnover of £3m to £33m over four years. That was much smaller than the business in Spain, but bigger than this post office is at the moment.’

IOM Post currently turns over between £20-£22m per year. Mr Chacksfield said he believes there is potential to grow this by offering new services to existing customers and diversifying into different business streams.

He said: ‘We need to look at the finance sector, which is a major growing sector, and the manufacturing sector, to see what we can provide them. We need to see if there is more work we can do for Government.

‘There maybe areas where we go into competitive tendering with the private sector. I am sure there is a lot of potential to develop this business. I will personally get involved with customers to see what we can do for them. We have mail opening services, running post rooms, document storage and integrated mail services (IMS).’

He added that there were services outside mail that would complement the post office.

He said: ‘There are a high number of related services that fit with the post office, that we could look at doing, but clearly we need to do things that fit with what we are doing. We have to take the feeling of stakeholders into account. We are open to any business that has synergies with what the Post Office does.

‘I can’t make any commitment right now, we have to put together a strategic plan for the future and ask the people of the Isle of Man, what they want from their post office.’

Mr Chacksfield is moving to the Island with his wife, Mary and they are currently looking to buy a house. He has four children, three sons and a daughter. His eldest son runs an internet business in Southampton and another is a trader with Fortis bank in the City. His youngest son is doing A-levels and his daughter is at boarding school.

He is a boat enthusiast and is looking forward to buying a sports cruiser and enjoying the views around the Island’s coastline.
