Takeaway food leaflets: We don't want them!

Peter Vincent has had enough of pizzas. He’s had his fill of Indian takeaways, too, and when it comes to kebabs, he’d really rather not.

He explained: “Leaflets advertising all these things come pouring through my letterbox all the time, and it’s getting out of hand. How many pizzas can the public of Tunbridge Wells eat?”

Mr Vincent, 61, of Mounfield Road, Tunbridge Wells, never eats pizza anyway, and his wife, Elisabeth, is allergic to them. He said: “We’re registered to stop junk mail and phone calls, but how do we stop leafletters stuffing things through our letterboxes? It’s our right not to get this stuff, which is unwanted and mostly just torn up.”

However Mandip Johal, manager of Domino’s Pizza in Mount Ephraim, Tunbridge Wells, said: “We couldn’t run our home delivery business without advertising in this way, and in the 18 months since we opened, we have had only one complaint.”

He added: “We run four to five campaigns a year and send out about 60,000 leaflets, but if householders display notices requesting no junk mail, we respect that.”

A spokesman for neighbouring Firebelly’s pizza restaurant, who also employs teams to deliver leaflets, agreed. “It is a necessary part of our advertising, but if there is any kind of note banning junk mail, then they don’t deliver them.”

However Mr Vincent, who is also battling to stop Royal Mail stamped junk mail, has a better idea.

“My plan is for red stars to be issued which would show at a glance that people want no unsolicited mail delivered. Displayed outside your house, it would be simple and effective, I think.”
