French Postal Rates to Increase on October 1, 2006

La Poste, the French post office, announced yesterday that the price of a stamp to send a letter weighing less than 20g within France will rise to the European average for domestic postage on October 1. At that point, it will cost 54 euro cents (up 1 euro cent on the current rate). The rate for items of the same weight sent to other EU countries or Switzerland will increase from 55 to 60 euro cents. In June, La Poste was told by Arcep, the French postal services and telecoms regulator, that it may not increase its postal rates by more than 2.1 per cent a year between 2006 and 2008. As a result, the price rise limit for a basic stamp during that period is 1 to 2 euro cents a year.
