Saudi Post and Siemens sign contract to develop postal services

The Minister of Telecommunication and Information Technology, Eng. Mohammed Jamil Mulla, who is the chairman of the board of directors of the Saudi Postal Corporation, signed in Riyadh recently a contract with Siemens International Company to develop and upgrade the Saudi postal operations. The function was attended by Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Benten, President of the Saudi Postal Corporation (SPC) and other board members.

The contract, worth SR 50 million, includes, among other things, enhancing the Saudi post competitive capabilities and auto processing of incoming and outgoing mail items in the Kingdom. Incoming and outgoing letters reach 800 million annually. The contract will eliminate manual sorting out of mail and provide electronic reading of addresses. The project will contribute significantly in facilitating the delivery of mail to customers. The contract, moreover, covers the organization of training programs for Saudi Post staff due to handle this project. Further, the new contract will provide logistic support for wasel (delivery) project, which aims at delivering mail to customers at their destinations.

It is worth mentioning that the Saudi Post is initiating an ambitious strategic program to be implemented in phases. The program includes a number of projects to be launched for the first time like the delivery of mail to houses and commercial establishments. The Saudi post, moreover, set up a company named Naqel (carrier) which is a joint project with the private sector and aims at upgrading the Saudi Post competitive capabilities and develop its services.
