Dubai Custom works with DHL to create groundbreaking integration solution

The revolutionary system incorporates Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), which allows express and logistics companies to send shipment information electronically and receive Customs clearance within minutes. The integration solution was designed after months of planning, envisioning and collaboration between Dubai Customs and DHL.

'This move, initiated with DHL Express, is a step forward to cover important sectors and to enhance our partnership with the business community and other service sectors including express and logistics companies,' said Ahmed Butti Ahmed, Director General, Dubai Customs.

Dubai Customs and DHL today officially announced the launch of an integration solution to facilitate a faster clearance process of global import consignments in the UAE.

Commenting on the launch, Bachi Spiga, DHL Area Operations Director Middle East, said:

'We are proud to work alongside Dubai Customs on this innovative system and live to our leadership position in the UAE. The implementation of this integration solution will provide total customs-clearance and real-time visibility into regional and global trade processes.'

'Unless there is a need to seek clarification, all transactions will be cleared on the same day. Customs automated feedback over declaration of inbound shipments indicates three possibilities; cleared, on hold or failed depending on the individual status,' said Mohammed Al Rasasi, Project Manager, Dubai Customs.

The EDI system utilises a set of data definitions that permit business forms to be exchanged electronically, shipments are cleared in the air before landing in Dubai, providing an error free, fast and effective solution.

DHL has been piloting the system for Dubai Customs this year to ensure it reaches maximum efficiency. Currently, the express and logistics leader prepares more than 2000 bills using the system on a daily basis.

'After successfully implementing the clearance system, our customers have their shipments pre-cleared in advance, giving them an extra advantage for delivering their businesses,' Spiga added.

The implementation of the integration solution has provided several operational and management benefits such as advanced declaration of the inbound shipments and thereby swift customs clearance. In addition, the system has boosted Dubai Customs' efforts towards strengthening the UAE's liberalised trade regime to further tie-in with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) guidelines.
