PostNL expands electric heavy-duty transport fleet

PostNL is increasing the number of electric trucks in its heavy-duty transport fleet from one to seven.

The six new Mercedes-Benz eActros trucks will operate on longer routes across the Netherlands and to Belgium and will be deployed twice a day with a fully loaded trailer. Each e-truck will cover around 150,000 kilometres a year. This will give electric transport an increasingly important role in PostNL’s heavy-duty transport operations. By 2031, around half of its heavy-duty transport is expected to be electric.

More electric kilometres

From 1 October, the new e-trucks will operate from Nieuwegein, Waddinxveen, Zwolle, Zaltbommel and Amsterdam. With a fully loaded trailer, they have a range of approximately 500 kilometres. This means they can also be deployed over longer distances, just like the other trucks in PostNL’s heavy-duty transport fleet.

When all six new trucks are fully deployed, approximately 2.5% of the kilometres driven by PostNL’s heavy-duty transport fleet will be electric. The electric trucks are also quieter, which is particularly beneficial to the surrounding area during night-time operations.

Electric fleet continues to grow

The six new e-trucks are part of PostNL’s ongoing efforts to make its heavy-duty transport more sustainable. More electric trucks will join the fleet in the coming years. PostNL also uses renewable fuels such as HVO100 and bio-LNG in its heavy-duty transport operations. Around half of the fleet is expected to be electric by 2031. This contributes to PostNL’s climate ambitions.

PostNL aims to reduce its CO₂ emissions by 45% by 2030. By 2040, PostNL aims to achieve net zero, with emissions reduced by at least 90%.
