UPS Chairman to chair Hands on Network Corporate Service Council

Hands On Network has announced that Michael Eskew, Chairman and CEO of UPS, will succeed Bob Nardelli, former chairman, president and CEO of The Home Depot, as the next chairman of the Hands On Network Corporate Service Council, an alliance of more than 65 CEOs from leading corporations and civic organizations who are changing the face of corporate volunteerism in America. Nardelli has served as chairman of the Corporate Service Council since its launch in early 2005.

“UPS has long been a leader and change agent in support of effective engagement of volunteers, and we are thrilled to elevate our already established relationship with UPS by engaging Mike Eskew to lead the Council through its next phase of growth and impact,” said Michelle Nunn, co-founder and CEO of Hands On Network. “We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Bob Nardelli for his tremendous leadership of the Council and his ongoing support of Hands On Network. Bob has been a truly amazing personal champion of service and an incredible advisor to us, setting a high bar in terms of his commitment and willingness to contribute his own “sweat equity.”

Eskew will assume the Council chairmanship in February. UPS was a founding member of Business Strengthening America, the predecessor of the Hands On Network Corporate Serivce Council. Through Evern Cooper, president of The UPS Foundation and vice president of Corporate Relations, UPS is currently active on the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, of which Nunn is also a member. Under Eskew’s leadership, the UPS Foundation set an unprecedented example of collaboration and partnership through the establishment of the Impact Fund, inviting other corporate partners to collectively invest in the sector through shared grant making. UPS has been honored nationally for its own corporate volunteer program and its investment in technology and marketing infrastructure to foster volunteerism in the public and non-profit sectors. The company was listed #1 for social responsibility on Fortune’s Most Admired List and #4 on Harris Interactives list of Corporate Reputation Leaders.

Nardelli and Nunn co-founded the Hands On Network Corporate Service Council in February 2005. Through Nardelli’s leadership, the Council has grown from 29 to over 65 members with overall goals to engage 100,000 Volunteer Leaders, raise the level of volunteerism across the country by 10%, and deliver impact in three areas – Children and Education, Health and Wellness, and the Environment – by 2008. Since the Council’s launch in 2005, Hands On Network and the Council companies have completed 10,450 Children and Education projects; 4,082 Health and Wellness projects, and 1,952 Environment projects.

In addition, over the past two years The Home Depot has grown their anniversary week celebration into an annual Corporate Month of Service. In 2005 and 2006, this initiative mobilized 137,651 volunteers in approximately 3,000 communities, resulting in a total of 1,192,604 service hours contributed. Recently, Hands On Network was honored by Fast Company/Monitor Group as a winner of the 2007 Social Capitalist Award, largely due to the organization’s innovative and impactful partnership with The Home Depot.
