Emery promotes Trimarco to dual positions

Emery Worldwide, a week after it lost a key contract with the Postal Service
to FedEx Express, has promoted Jerry Trimarco, the former head of its postal
operations, to chief executive of sister company Emery Worldwide Airlines, a
new position. He was also named vice president of transportation of Emery
Worldwide. Both companies are subsidiaries of CNF Inc.
Jim Allen, a CNF spokesman, said there was never any problem with the
operation of the postal contract. Rather, he said, the dispute was over the
terms of the contract. Allen described Trimarco as “a longtime key guy with
Emery.” Trimarco’s promotion came a week after the U.S. Postal Service
canceled its priority mail contract with Emery and announced that it had
entered into a long-term agreement with FedEx to provide air transport for
priority and express mail over the next seven years. Emery continues to fly
mail for the Postal Service, but 10 priority mail processing centers
operated by Emery for USPS in the Eastern United States were closed last
week.
Emery’s loss of the postal business sparked rumors among Emery’s pilots that
CNF will be announcing a sale of Emery to United Parcel Service early next
week. Allen declined to comment on the rumors, as did Norman Black, a UPS
spokesman.
Trimarco, a 23-year veteran of the air cargo industry, is based in Dayton,
Ohio, site of Emery’s global sortation center as well as headquarters for
Emery Worldwide Airlines.
Chutta Ratnathicam, chief executive of Emery Worldwide, announced Trimarco’s
promotion on Tuesday. Kent Scott, president and chief operating officer of
Emery Worldwide Airlines, will report to Trimarco.
“A key to Emery’s future success is our ability to provide a reliable and
cost-effective North America transportation network,” Ratnathicam said in a
statement. “I believe this needs a single point of focus and accountability
regardless of whether this involves aircraft, trucks or hub operations.
Jerry will be responsible for this effort, and his varied background in
sales, operations and Priority Mail management uniquely qualifies him for
this important role.” Trimarco has served as Emery’s postal operations
president since 1997, with responsibility for the planning, implementation
and operation of the 10 priority mail processing centers under contract with
the USPS. The operations of the centers were transferred to the Postal
Service on Jan. 7.
Trimarco previously served as Emery Worldwide’s vice president of global
sales for the Eastern area. He was also the company’s Boston division
manager and served as New York division manager with CF AirFreight for eight
years.
