Value of Europe & UK road transport business
The FTA’s view:
DETR last calculated industry spend on road freight transport in 1990, when the figure stood at £46 billion out of a total GDP of £556 billion. So on the face of it 7% of GDP doesn’t sound too far out” (Simon Chapman, their Economist)
I think that 7% relates to all transport by road – passenger and freight
(but it’s amazing that no one seems to know definitively!), and:
EU figures say road transport for total EU accounts for 4-5% of GDP, which
would be 338-423 Billion Euros at 2000 GDP (range accounted for by possible
different classifications of “own-account”)
If the same ratio applied to the UK, then the range would be £40-47 for 2000
So….I’m going with £40 Billion until someone tells me not to!
Thanks for your help
