Slovak Post Office retains monopoly for hybrid post services

The elimination of the Slovak Post Office’s monopoly in the field of hybrid post services was the main goal of an amendment to the Postal Services Act proposed by opposition SDKU-DS MP Ivan Stefanec that was rejected at its first reading in Parliament this week.

Stefanec says that his objective was to return free choice to clients and to re-establish competition. “The currently valid law is only causing damage. People deserve well-functioning services in the postal sphere and not the strengthening of the state’s monopoly”.

According to Stefanec, the current “controversial law wasn’t aimed at serving people, but only at creating a state monopoly”, which is in contradiction with European Union rules, as demonstrated by a decision made in October 2008 by the European Commission (EC), which ordered Slovakia to re-introduce competition in this sphere.
