Australia Post launch green stamps

Australia Post will join the growing chorus of voices raised on the subject of climate change with the release of three stamps commemorating Earth Hour.

Australia Post will join the growing chorus of voices raised on the subject of climate change with the release of three stamps commemorating Earth Hour.

The specially designed stamps, released on 10 March, feature an owl, a possum and an orangutan and carry messages to conserve energy. Australia Post expects to sell several hundred thousand of them.

“Australia Post is a committed supporter of this important environmental initiative,” said the group manager of Philatelic, Noel Leahy. “The health of the environment is an important global issue and through this stamp issue we hope to engage the community in efforts to help combat global warming by reminding and encouraging them to turn off their lights at 8.30pm on Saturday 28 March.”

This is the third year of Earth Hour, an event organised by WWF Australia in conjunction with Fairfax Media. It has grown from 2.2m participants in Sydney in 2007 to an estimated 50m in 35 countries last year. This year it hopes 1bn people will switch off and send a strong message to politicians who will meet in December to thrash out a successor to the Kyoto Protocol.

“2009 is a vital year for action on climate change,” said the chief executive of WWF Australia, Greg Bourne.
