Deutsche Post could shorten worker hours if the current downturn continues to affect postal volumes, the company’s chief executive said on 11 March.

Frank Appel, CEO at the Bonn-based company, said shorter hours for workers couldn’t be ruled out if postal volumes continued at the low levels seen so far this year.

Postal volume “declines of 20% or 30% can’t go on without changes to the team,” Appel said.

He said any changes would likely affect the express and logistics unit DHL the most, but that he didn’t foresee any job losses. The company would take advantage of attrition and country managers would make decisions based on their individual business.
