DHL has acquired Romanian rival Cargus in a deal that is understood to be the largest transaction in the domestic courier market.

The deal, the value of which has not been disclosed, is part of DHL’s strategy to reaffirm its position as market leader in the local express courier market.

On completion of the deal, the two companies will continue to trade as separate entities and maintain their own employees, brands and services.

McGregor & Partners provided legal advice to DHL. Managing partner Neil McGregor said, “The successful acquisition of a large business with many staff and branches required a commercial approach, combining international expertise with knowledge of the practicalities of doing business and the postal regulatory framework in Romania.”
