UK Government: Allan Leighton appointed Non-Executive Director for the new Post Office company

appointed to
the new Post Office company, Consignia Holdings Plc, as one of five
non-executive directors, with effect from Monday 2nd April 2001. He is the
Chairman of British Home Stores Ltd. The new position will bring in
skills and experience to the full range of
issues facing the Board. He will have special responsibility for the
future
development of the Post Office Network. Notes to Editors 1. Allan
Leighton began his career in 1973 with Mars Inc., where he worked for
18 years in a number of positions. He joined Asda in 1991 as Marketing
Director, becoming CEO in 1997. He became President and CEO of Wal+mart
Europe
in 2000. He is currently Chairman of British Home Stores, Race for
Opportunity
(part of Business in the Community), Last Minute.com, Wilson Connolly Plc;
Deputy Chairman of Leeds Sporting Plc; and Director of Scottish Power Plc,

Sky B Broadcasting Plc, Dyson Ltd and George Weston Inc. 2. The
appointment term is for two years with fees of GBP20,000 per annum plus
any appropriate allowances. Mr Leighton is a member of the Labour Party.
This
is the first time he has been appointed to a post by a Minister.
