Deutsche Post DHL is to cut up to 520 jobs, primarily at its DHL Express unit, it said on 16 June.

A company spokesman said about 430 of the jobs to go would be in Belgium, though about 130 staff would be offered a switch to the company’s site in Leipzig, Germany. The move is to be completed by the second quarter of 2010.

The company’s headquarters in Bonn, Germany, will see 80-90 jobs go by October, the spokesman added.

Deutsche Post said in May it wanted to speed up its cost-cutting programme, aiming for savings of $1.39bn by 2010.

The group employs more than 500,000 staff in all.

The company posted a 42% drop in first-quarter underlying earnings before interest and tax as sluggish consumer spending hurt shippers around the world.
