Environmentally friendly bags for Australia Post

Australia Post will soon stop supplying plastic bags to customers in its retail outlets, to help reduce their impact on the environment.

Post office customers will be encouraged to bring their own re-usable bag if they need one. Most post offices will also have environmentally friendly re-usable bags to purchase.

Australia Post spokesperson, Scott McIntyre, said the plastic bags would be phased out gradually.

“We will continue to use the stocks of plastic bags we have on hand, but once these supplies have been exhausted we will actively encourage our customers to make more environmentally friendly choices,” he said.

“Our customer research found that over 95% of people were supportive of our move to phase out plastic bags, with almost half of those surveyed saying they were starting to take their own bags with them when they went shopping.

“Reducing our reliance on plastic bags is an easy way for each of us to make a positive contribution to the environment and we’ve been very pleased that our customers are ready to embrace this type of initiative.”

To reduce the number of bags provided to customers and ease-in to this change, post office staff stopped proactively offering plastic bags to customers in April this year.

Until recently, Australia Post provided an average of 30 500 plastic bags to its customers every day, which translates to only 0.3% of each day’s customers across the country.
