Magyar Posta is to build a new logistics centre with a budget of HUF 6n (€21.79m).
The constructor will be chosen in a public procurement tender this autumn.
Magyar Posta needs the new facility, which will be its second logistics base in Hungary, so that it would remain competitive even after the liberalisation of the postal services market in 2013. In order to keep pace the company will need to improve the quality of its services, CEO Ildikó Szûcs told a press conference.
The Hungarian Post is already high in the European ranking. This means that 93-94% of priority mails reach their destination the following day, while the international standard is only 85%, the CEO underlined.
The new logistics base (a letter processing unit), which is to be up and running by the second half of 2011, will sprawl on 13,000 square metres and serve the eastern part of the country. The western regions will remain the responsibility of the Budaörs base, Szûcs said.
Magyar Posta examined 14 locations before choosing Gödöllõ for the new facility, primarily because of the proximity of the M3 motorway and the M0 ring road.
Magyar Posta posted a pre-tax profit of HUF 8bn last year and is upgrading 50 post offices this year.
György Gémesi, mayor of Gödöllõ, said the local government sold the plot for the logistics base to Magyar Posta for HUF 180m. The new plant will create 700 jobs.
