New internet ‘hybrid mail’ service to compete with Deutsche Post

German publisher Georg von Holtzbrinck has teamed up with private logistics companies to create a ‘hybrid mail’ service.
According to the WirtschaftsWoche magazine, Pin Mail, Arriva, Main-Post Logistik and TNT are meeting this week to discuss plans to the combination of e-mail with traditional “snail mail”.

The meeting in Berlin on Thursday will focus on bringing the new product to all of Germany, with a focus on small and medium-sized companies.

These companies can use the online service as an alternative to Deutsche Post to electronically send bills, contract correspondence and insurance memos to letter portals, where they will be printed and delivered regionally.

“This should reduce transport costs and guarantee delivery within 24 hours nationwide,” the magazine said.

Pin Mail already formed its first internet portal for uploading letters in July, and more are set to follow soon after the meeting on Thursday.
