Byers in post office promise

Trade and Industry Secretary Stephen Byers has pledged that the future of the local post office is safe. Speaking at the annual conference of the National Federation of Subpostmasters, Mr Byers described the Post Office network as ‘a great national treasure’. He urged NFSP members not to view change as a threat but as an opportunity to modernise their service, capitalise on the Post Office brand and take advantage of being part of Europe’s largest retail network. Mr Byers insisted that mechanisms such as Universal Banking Services and Government General Practitioners will help secure the future of the UK’s 18,000 post offices, which are closing at a rate of two per day.
