A nose for the iPhone

It is with interest I read today that NASA has developed a stamp size sensor for the iPhone which provides chemical sensing capability to the device. Although this technology is in ‘the proof of concept’ stage at the moment, the chances are that this type of capability will start to be seen within the next few years. So why should we be interested?

Having sensing capability in the iPhone in its own right is probably not of that much interest to the delivery industry other than to sense for pathogens such as Anthrax and maybe even bombs within packages and parcels. It does open up, however, the view that this portable device is becoming much more than only a phone and will, I believe, spur other developers to find new and exciting uses for the device.
