DHL open new service center in Hong Kong
The new center occupies 100,000 square feet, and has the capacity to route up to 16,000 shipments per hour. It is the largest of its kind in Hong Kong.
DHL has invested over US$10 million to in the building of this service centre which is expected to result in a 20 per cent increase in courier productivity and 40 per cent increase in shipment handling capacity. Operating 24 hours a day, the centre will be handling around 65 per cent of DHL Hong Kong’s shipments.
Furthermore new centre employs advanced technology and systems to automate and streamline shipment processing. DHL says the centre utilises the company’s transportation harmonised procedure (THP), which standardises and refines shipment process flow with the incorporation of state-of-the-art systems. The “clear in the air” (CIA) system employs imaging technology to store digital images of shipping documents needed for electronic customs clearance.
In addition, the cutting edge, “weigh, dimensioning and labelling” (WDL) system can process up to 500 packages per hour. It accurately measures the volumetric weight of each package, enabling faster and more precise shipment measurement.
The center also makes use of wireless radio frequency scanners to increase operational flexibility. Courier productivity will be further enhanced with the upgrade of DHL’s CatsEye scanners handheld wireless computers that allow shipment data to be exchanged between the couriers and DHL’s data network.
