FRESH CALLS FOR PROGRESS ON POSTAL SERVICE LIBERALISATION.

Phillipe Bodson, President of the Free and Fair Post Initiative (FFPI), injected new blood into the debate on liberalisation of European postal services on June 13, by appealing to the Belgian Parliament’s Chamber of Representatives. Arguing that the existing framework is inadequate, he said change was unavoidable and need not be feared. In particular, he appealed for a deadline for final liberalisation. Acceleration of liberalisation was mandated by EU leaders in March 2000, he noted, calling on Belgium to use its EU Presidency from July to December this year to push the process further. The FFPI claims the substantial support of trade and professional organisations, such as direct marketers, publishers, retailers and express couriers.
