Eurozone a no-go area
THE Post Office continues to lose an unacceptable number of work days through strikes and absenteeism. More shockingly it “loses” one million items of mail each week. The creation of Consignia as a holding company and the eminent arrival of postal competition ought to be improving the Royal Mail. It is perverse it only seems to get worse. British mail volumes continue to grow only modestly – they are less than three per cent of urgent messages naturally going by email, text messaging and fax. Nobody wanting to relay something rapidly thinks of a first class letter as the appropriate vehicle. The Government has said it will not privatise the Post Office but it seems glaringly obvious that is its destiny. Everything about the Post Office is irrational but it continues to frighten politicians as we’re all fond of our postman. It is curious. From
being amiable and obliging people at our doorsteps they seem to go back to
headquarters and turn into caricatures of trade union obstructionism and
restrictive practices.
Competition will bring daylight to this fusty world. Interesting lesson.
