Dutch govt to maintain independent telecom/post watchdog Opta until 2005

The Dutch cabinet has decided that the telecom and postal sector watchdog Opta will remain an independent body until 2005, Opta said.

The cabinet agreed to make the Opta an agency within the NMa, the national competition authority, from 2005. From 2003, the cooperation between the two agencies must improve and appear better detailed in the law, according to the cabinet’s evaluation report.

While it is satisfied with the cabinet decision, Opta said in a statement that the cabinet should also investigate the possibility of a broader communications sector regulator, in line with other countries such as the UK.
