UPS plea to mayor Ken

UPS is to appeal to London Mayor Ken Livingstone against the decision to exclude clean diesel from exemptions from London’s congestion charges, announced in the Transport Strategy last week.
According to the integrator, vehicles running on clean diesel are as environmentally-friendly as liquid petroleum gas and compressed natural gas, which have been excluded from paying the £5 ( t8) charge expected in 2003.

“This is a key issue for UPS, ” said Nigel Goodson, its UK human resources and public affairs director.

He added that with cities around the world looking at the London strategy closely, removing policy flaws is crucial.

He said: “The costs of converting to LPG are prohibitive.

It could make sense economically to convert to clean diesel if there was the incentive to do so.

“If we were granted an exemption for green diesel, we would be given that incentive.”
