Swiss Post between growing and saving

The Swiss Post made a net profit for the year 2000 of CHF 6.022 billion. This represented a slight increase of 5.6% over the previous financial year. However operating expenses were up too. With a profit of CHF 118 million, the Swiss Post was able to present positive business results for each its three years as an independent operation. The results mean however that group profits fell back by 29.3% compared with last year. The Swiss mail services provider is not satisfied with its results for the year 2000: it recorded profits of CHF 167 million in 1999, and of CHF 239 million in 1998. Accordingly, the executives of the Swiss Post commented at the press conference accompanying the annual report that the company’s results were not wholly satisfactory and that the company needed to put the development of profitability on a more solid basis. They added that the Swiss Post intended to achieve this goal through an increased rate of growth, higher margins (in parcel services) and by cutting costs (with the internet portal «yellowworld»).
