UPS expands US business mail processing capacity

UPS is expanding its processing capacity at its high-volume business mail services unit, UPS Mail Innovations. Improving its services for companies in the Southwest United States, the company has opened a new processing centre near Phoenix, Arizona, and is also investing to double the processing capacity at its existing centre in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

With the new centre in Tolleson, Arizona, UPS Mail Innovations now has 16 processing centres around the US.

John Walsh, vice president of business development for the UPS unit, said: “We continue to invest smartly in UPS Mail Innovations because we recognize the critical role it plays in helping businesses operate and grow. Business mail processing, when done right, is a vital part of effective logistics for any business.”

UPS Mail Innovations is a work-share partner with the United States Postal Service, along with other postal services around the world, picking up large volumes of mail from its business customers before applying postage and sorting it before passing it to the USPS system for final delivery at lower rates.

Rising demand for outsourced mail services has already seen the company expanding capabilities at its Logan Township facility in New Jersey, where a new parcel sorting system was installed last October to speed up processing of parcels under a pound in weight.

In Rancho Cucamonga, the company is set to double processing capacity within the month, and next year is to install a parcel sorting system at the site.

The new Tolleson processing centre in Arizona, meanwhile, provides capacity to process 20,000 mail pieces a day for delivery out of state, along with the processing of 28,000 pieces a day for distribution within the state.

UPS said the new centre would improve services for its customers in Arizona and New Mexico, particularly in the retail and pharmaceutical industries.

David Larkin, regional manager for UPS Mail Innovations, said: “Opening this facility in Arizona enables us to offer customers in the region more efficient and effective service than ever before.”
