Sandd strengthens with Selektmail acquisition

Dutch mailing company Sandd is to acquire Deutsche Post DHL local subsidiary Selektmail. The company said it plans to gradually integrate the two businesses.

A market rival to TNT, Sandd has been active in the Dutch postal market since 2001, and with the acquisition its market share will be boosted to approximately 16%.

Originally setup to provide budget solutions to the corporate mail sector, Sandd delivers more than 450m items per year, and employs 14,000 staff.

Gert-Jan Morsink, CEO of Sandd, said: “This is a good day for Sandd, and a good day for the Dutch postal market. For ten years we have a stable and reliable partner for our customers, and this step allows us to continue to build there.  We see today an ambition achieved. ”

The company is headquartered in Apeldoorn, with 70 offices across the Netherlands, providing 100% national coverage

Despite the acquisition, employee issues remain. The Dutch government has set a deadline of April 1 for Sandd and Selektmail to provide proper contracts to its staff.

Currently around 80% of the companies’ joint work-force is paid only a few cents per item delivered, as well as working without sick pay, holiday pay or a pension scheme.

Financial details were not disclosed. The deal still has to be approved by the competition authority.
